Cars

A car, also known as a motorcar or automobile, is wheeled vehicle used to carry passengers. Cars also have their own engine, and the general definitions of automobiles specify that they have four wheels, are designed to run on roads, seat from one to eight people, and are used primarily for carrying people, not goods. This is not a precise term, because there are many vehicles that do a variety of things.

The word automobile comes from the Ancient Greek word autos(self) and the Latin word mobilis(movable). This means a vehicle that moves by itself, rather than being pushed or pulled by another vehicle or animals. The word car is believed to have come from the Latin word carrus or carrum, meaning “wheeled vehicle”.

Around 1672, a man named Ferdinand Verbiest designed a vehicle that steam powered but it did not carry passengers. Since that time many inventors have made contributions to the development of the modern day car. In 1806, a man named Francois Isaac de Rivez, a Swiss inventor, made the first internal combustion engine. This engine was powered by a combination of oxygen and hydrogen, and was used to develop the worlds first automobile to use this type of engine. Even though several other German engineers were working on the same problem at that time, Karl Benz is considered to be the inventor of the modern vehicle. It was during the 1800’s that he developed what would become the modern vehicle. At the end of the 19th century, Benz was the largest car company in the world, with 572 cars being produced in 1899. Gradually, and through a series of mergers with other companies, on June 28th, 1928, Benz became known as the Mercedes-Benz company.

In 1902, Ransom Olds debuted the production line manufacturing in his Oldsmobile factory. But in 1914, that concept was greatly expanded by Henry Ford.
Because of this, Henry’s cars came off the line in 15 minute intervals, which was much faster than previous methods. This increased productivity greatly, by eight-fold, while at the same time reducing man power needed. Henry Ford also dropped all varieties of paint color that were available before 1914. He only used Japan black, as it was the only one at the time that would dry fast enough.

Ford had some complex safety procedures-,particularly assigning workers to one station instead of letting them move around- that greatly reduced on-the-job injuries. Most major industries copied Ford’s method of high wages and high efficiency. By and by, Ford’s success was so great in the automobile industry that expansion was seen worldwide.

Today, greatly because of Henry Ford’s methods, there are many types of cars available. There are light weight vehicles, and there are heavy duty vehicles. Cars come in a variety of styles and colors. There are classic model vehicles and there hot rods, racers, and luxury vehicles, as well as many others. One can find almost any kind of car they seek to find, anything from a two-seater to 15 passenger van. There are really not many limits when it comes to finding a car.
